It’s been a minute, but this is the Never Sorry rehearsal for our show that occurred at the Pilot Light in Knoxville, TN on March 23rd, 2012.  It’s actually a selection of takes from three different sets that occurred between two sessions on March 21st and 22nd.  Most of these songs had never been played live or even put up on the website from former sessions.

A lot of punk and rock opera type influences seem to seep through here.  We were very fortunate to have Jay Allen joining us on drums for this one.  It’s also very likely this session may get remixed, remastered and formally released as a proper album at some point in the future of the El Deth discography.

A good handful of this material is but a small portion of the cathartic discharge of a highly sadistic, disturbing, romantic relationship that dominated my 2011.  A lot of the sour blood spillage from that relationship ended up splattering on to some of my deeper friendships.  That aspect is where “Silver and Gold” comes from.  “Rachel and Dee Dee” is also about two friends of mine taking issue with some aspect of our friendship, but it was written back in 2010.

“Train to Nagano” reaches back to my solo album, Part 3.  Though strangely, Dane began playing this progression at one rehearsal, without ever having heard the previously published version.  On the playback, I realized it was the exact same song.  So here it is with the full band treatment.

The closing track, “Randy Scouse Git” is a cover of a Monkees song.  We had this in the works when Davey Jones died, making it particularly, but sadly, suitable for the set.  As far as songs from that era go, this one is pretty forward thinking.

Arrison Kirby – vocals, guitar, keys
RJ. Hill –  vocals, omnichord
Dane Hill – bass, vocals
Jay Allen – drums

“Starve it Out and Never Go Hungry”
“Blue”
“Laundry”
“Cute Little Echo”
“The Finger Wag”
“Michael in the War”
“House of Satan”
“Dayman” (Charlie Day)

So this is our rehearsal session from our show on October 20th, at the Pilot Light in Knoxville, Tennsee, with Kishi Bashi.  This was recorded the evening before the show.  Obviously, we took a more minimal approach this time, slimming down to a trio for this recording.  As usual, that’s not quite how it went at the show, with the last minute addition of Megan Driscoll.  Kishi Bashi also joined us for the finale cover of “Dayman,” as made popular by the FX program, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as well as an impromptu improvisational session at the end of the end.

On the recording, as during the live performance, “Dayman” bares a triumphant intro segment.  During the live set, we performed with a casket laid out in front of the stage.  At this point, the casket was opened, releasing helium filled balloons and light beams.  A happy end to an otherwise rather dark set.

Dane Hill – bass, vocals
Rachel Jae – omnichord, vocals
Arrison Kirby – keys, beats, vocals

Thank you for attending!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Pilot Light for Kishi Bashi and Never Sorry last Thursday.  I’m really really glad that new people were exposed to Kishi Bashi’s music.  And thanks for sticking around for Never Sorry, also.

If anyone has pictures or video they would like to share, holla at me.  You can check out some video of the Kishi Bashi set on Maurita Roman’s YouTube account.

There is a massive interchange of energy going on in America right now.  Why fight it?

Obadiah & How I Became the Bomb @ The Pilot Light – Knoxville, TN – 7.28.2011

This is the first show Obadiah will have played together in about five years.  When the offer came through (not a week before the show), we all figured, “why not?”  I don’t think any of us were certain as to what exactly was going to happen at our first scheduled session / rehearsal.  That being the past now, I would say that it feels as if we never stopped in the first place.  I won’t say that, though, because I feel we are all actually much better musicians now with a more mature sound then what it was when we left off.

This is likely going to be a rare one off as drummer, Josh Russell, will be shipping out to Oregon in just a few weeks.  So come on down and see what Obadiah has become.  You will not be disappointed.

Never Sorry at the Pilot Light – The Goddess of Awesome – 3.27.2011

So apparently The Goddess of Awesome came to our show at the Pilot Light on March 25th.  She wrote up a pretty cut and dry review of the show.

That picture is linked from her blog.  It’s pretty good except for how misshapen my head appears.

“Monkey Waltz”
“Afraid of the Ghost”
“Blue”
“Anemone” (Brian Jonestown Massacre)
“Dead”
“House of Satan”
“Single Politician”
“Cute Little Echo”
“Tender” (Blur)
“Reading Rainbow” (Horelick, Kleinman & Weir)

Sorry it took a minute, but this is the rehearsal session from two days before our show at the Pilot Light.  This is almost exactly as we played and what we said but for a small edit before “Tender” due to things said and done that I’m best not to repeat, lest I would not have removed them in the first place.  It was actually a really enjoyable moment, but a name was said in a context best left private.

Anyway.  Holly Denman was hanging out at that night’s session.  She’s the Holly referenced in the inbetween talk.  Remy is my dog.  Also, Dane didn’t actually eat any LSD.  I was trying to be funny…or something.

There are a few aural differences between this rehearsal and the live set.  They are as follows:

1. You can hear the flute.

2. Samuel Williams is not playing at the rehearsal, though he did join us on banjo for the “Reading Rainbow” finale.

3. At the rehearsal, we took Reading Rainbow into the weird Ghostbusters tease at the end.  It was considered for the show, but ultimately not used.

4. At the show, I used a much more organic guitar sound on “House of Satan.”

5. The ghost (played by Jonny Andrews) played beam theramin at the show, but not on the recording unfortunately.

Katie Collins – omnichord
Megan Driscoll –  flute, vocals, harmonica, tambourine
Dane Hill – bass, drums
Rachel Jae – auxillary percussion, vocals
Arrison Kirby – guitar, keys
Nathan Brown – keys, electronics
